New York allows qualified physical therapists to evaluate and treat patients without a referral for up to 10 visits or 30 days, whichever comes first.
A referral may be required after that period or sooner if coordination with another healthcare provider is appropriate. Patients beginning physical therapy without a referral will be asked to sign the required Notice of Advice form.
A referral is not required for wellness and performance services.

Physical therapy is skilled healthcare for individuals experiencing pain, recovering from an injury or surgery, or managing a condition that affects movement and daily function. It includes a clinical evaluation, individualized plan of care, treatment, and ongoing documentation.
Wellness and performance services are designed for medically stable individuals who want to improve strength, mobility, balance, conditioning, injury resilience, or overall physical performance. These services are not a substitute for medical care or skilled physical therapy.
If you are unsure which service is appropriate, schedule a complimentary discovery call.
